PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst for olefin polymerization, capable of giving a polymer narrow in molecular weight distribution and composition distribution, and excellent in transparency and mechanical strength, and to provide a method for producing an olefin polymer using the same catalyst. SOLUTION: This catalyst for olefin polymerization contains (A) a IV to VI group transition metal compound having a conjugate, 5-membered ligand, and (B) an ion-exchangeable, lamellar compound (except silicate) or an inorganic silicate, wherein the component B contains lithium ion as cation and has half- width (β1/2 :: deg.2θ) of the diffraction peak of 2.0 or less at the (0, 0, 1) plane, obtained by powder X-ray diffractometry. The method for producing an olefin polymer polymerizes an olefin compound in the presence of the above catalyst.
