PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method for cooling an optical fiber free of the intrusion of a refrigerant to a resin and the adhesion of impurities to this optical fiber by making it possible to obtain a sufficient cooling effect by liquid with a small-sized cooler and eliminating the need for the special refrigerant and a cooler used for this method. SOLUTION: This method for cooling the optical fiber consists in drawing an optical fiber preform 23 by heating and melting and cools the high-temp. optical fiber 26 obtd. right after this drawing prior to a coating stage by the resin. In this method, the resin which is the same as the resin for coating the first layer of the optical fiber 26 is cooled and the resin made low in temp. by this cooling is brought into contact with the optical fiber 26 prior to the coating stage, by which the optical fiber 26 is cooled. |
