PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound, useful as an intermediate for synthesizing antineoplastic agents, antibiotics or catalysts for asymmetric reduction. SOLUTION: This compound is shown by formula I (R<1> is an aliphatic group, aromatic group or the like), e.g. methyl (S)-3 -cyclopropyl-3 -hydroxypropionate. The compound shown by formula I is obtained by (A) asymmetrically reducing a compound shown by formula II (R<2> is an aliphatic group or the like) at 20 to 100 atm for 1 to 120 h in a hydrogen atmosphere, preferably at 50 to 100 deg.C in the presence of 2 to 20 wt.%, based on the compound shown by formula II, of a catalyst of Raney nickel modified with (S, S or R, R)-tartaric acid, and, as required, (B) hydrolyzing the product of the above step. The compound shown by formula II is obtained by reacting, at normal temperature, cyclopropylcarbonyl chloride with 2,2 -dimethyl-1,3 -dioxane-4,6 -dione. The compound shown by formula I gives a compound for antineoplastic agents or antibiotics via a compound shown by formula III or IV. |
