PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively, stably and efficiently decompose environmental pollutants and malodorous substances over a long period of time by bringing a liquid or gas to be treated into contact with activated carbon substantially held to an aseptic state by the irradiation with electromagnetic waves in the presence of an oxygen atom supplying substance. SOLUTION: Activated carbon is held to a substantially aseptic state in the presence of an oxygen atom supply substance being gas containing oxygen such as air or oxygen enriched gas to stably and efficiently decompose environmental pollutants and malodorous substances. For example, a stainless steel column 1 is packed with a mixture of granular activated carbon and synthetic quartz beads. Further, the ultraviolet sterilizing lamp 5 equipped with a power supply 6 inserted into a synthetic quartz pipe 4 is set at the center of the column 1 in the long axis direction thereof and filters 2 are arranged to the internal of the column 2. Gas to be treated is passed through the column 1 thus constituted from a gas supply port A and the treated liquid to be treated is discharged from a discharge port B. |
