Prevention of repeated compacting of powdered heat insulation material.in the space 10 between inner and outer shells 2, 1 of a liquefied gas, e.g. methane container is effected by surrounding the inner shell by a layer of compressible and resilient fibrous matting, 11 e.g. glass or cellulose acetate fibres which is compressed between the inner shell 2 and the powdered material upon relative thermal movement of the two shells towards each other without exerting a substantial pressure on the inner shell 2. The latter which is cylindrical is of aluminium with bracing ribs 7 and the resilient layers 11 is secured by bands 15 and by cords 13 to a ring 14 surrounding the cover 9 of the inner shell 2. The outer shell has welded steel side plates covered by reinforced steel plates 5 and resting on a steel base plate 4 covered by heat insulating bricks 9a. |
