Gel-forming compositions containing chlorhexidine

Pharmaceutical composition comprises 85-55 wt.% water soluble diluent (selected from lactose, mannitol and sorbitol), 10-30 wt.% hydroxyethyl cellulose, 1-15 wt.% polyvinyl pyrrolidone and about 1% of a lubricant. Also claimed is the formulation of tablets which are susceptible to gel formation by mixing the above composition with a graded powder containing an active agent.
