Direct-injection rotary-piston diesel engine

The engine has a rotor (8) which acts as a compressor and delivers pressurised air to the second chamber (11), which has direct fuel injectors (4,4'), and operates as a compression ignition motor. Exhaust gases (7,7') are fed to a turbine coupled to an alternator, which powers all ancillary equipment. The engine comprises at least two rotary piston units of the Wankeltype with rotors linked with a common shaft. Transfer ports (13,14,15) are located in the end faces of the rotors and housings. The porting arrangements provide the timing, and along with the multiple injectors, enable each unit to perform at least two operating cycles per lobe per revolution of the rotor. The compressor can have a variable by-pass, provided by a disc valve (12) arrangement or by pressure valve. Inter heaters (5) can be used to raise the temperature of the pressurised transfer air.
