Football has an outer skin (11) comprising a top layer complex (20), and a backing layer complex (12) located on an inflatable bladder core (9) with a middle layer (13) disposed therebetween. The top layer complex (20) has an outer aliphatic transparent layer (22) followed by layer (24) having decorative markings. The next layer (26) includes a coloured aliphatic layer, and layer (50) includes a syntactic foam layer consisting of hollow spheres (54) of acrylonitrile copolymers in a matrix material (52). An adhesive layer (28) bonds the backing layer (30) of polyester/ cotton mix fabric. The top layer complex (20) is then bonded to the middle (13) and backing layers (12) using natural latex. The syntactic layer pref. uses polyurethane, polyurethane foam, or PVC as the matrix material.
