The valve cross head assembly comprises a crosshead formed of metal having a recess in a top surface. A disc-shaped contact pad is formed of a ceramic material loosely disposed in the recess, and a resilient retainer is clipped onto a top portion of the crosshead in a position partially overlying the recess. A portion of the top surface of the contact pad loosely retains the contact pad in the recess. The ceramic material is disc-shaped and formed of silicon nitride. The disc-shaped contact pad has a base portion which is disposed in the recess and a contact portion. The contact portion is smaller in area than the base portion and projects above the top surface of the crossarm.
