The method of using the automatic transmission involves using an electrical or electrohydraulic controller and a selection device. In a first mode the controller automatically selects a transmission ratio. In a second mode it is at least partly controlled by the driver. In the second mode the driver can select between different drive strategies (D1-D4) in a drive stage. For each strategy the transmission ratio is a function at least of the speed of travel or the accelerator pedal position or the gradient.
