The continuous or indexing furnace, particularly for enamel baking incorporates a longitudinal slit (1a) for passage of conveying elements (2, 3) carrying work-pieces. On each side of the slit there are slideways (7) for cover plates (4, 5, 6) which overlap one another in the transport direction in the fashion of fish scales, and serve as sealing elements for the slit. The cover plates are made of glas with high resistance to large temperature gradients and elevated temperatures.
