The method involves first interrupting the fuel flow to the engine (1) when the engine is switched off. The choke element is then finally moved into a position in which it blocks the air channel (3). A controller (10) moves the choke element (9) into the closed position when the difference between the pressure of air fed into the channel and atmospheric pressure falls below a threshold value.
