By measuring both pressure and temperature at rest, the system can detect when fluid loss has caused pressure to fall below saturation pressure of fluid. With the refrigerating circuit being at rest, and the compressor being stopped, the measured pressure (PM) of the refrigerant fluid is determined by a pressure sensor (9). The measured temperature (TM ) is determined by a further sensor (23), and from this temperature, the corresponding saturation pressure (PS) is determined. The measured pressure is compared with the saturation pressure, and if the measured pressure is below the saturation pressure, the clutch driving the compressor is disengaged.
