The battery cell cap (2) has a horizontal passage (1) in its lower part, which is inside the battery cell, to allow electrolyte splashes to return easily to the cell interior. A vertical passage (4) rises from the middle of the horizontal passage, and opens into the hollow interior (5) of the cap. A fine outlet hole at the centre of the top of the cap allows gas to escape.
