PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which is driven for display by controlling the effective value of a driving voltage and can be driven on a time-division basis with high duty. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device consists of a liquid crystal cell 10 which has liquid crystal molecules oriented into a 1st or 2nd metastable state according to a metastable select voltage applied after a reset voltage is applied and changes in the orientation state in the metastable state according to the effective value of the driving voltage and polarizing plates 21 and 22; and electrooptic characteristic of the display device when the liquid crystal molecules are oriented into the 1st metastable state and electrooptic characteristics when the liquid crystal molecules are oriented into the 2nd metastable state are selectively used for display and a liquid crystal material having dielectric anisotropyΔε>=10 with high reset responsiveness is used for the liquid crystal. |
