<p>The invention provides a method for removing oil from waste drilling mud (WDM) comprising mixing WDM with a microemulsion-forming surfactant and allowing the mixture to separate into phases wherein the interfacial tension between the microemulsion phase and conjugate polar phase is less than 10?-4 mNm-1¿. The oil may be biodegraded by inoculating the nucroemulsion oil containing phase with hydrocarbon degrading microorganisms such as bacteria belonging to the genera Rhodococcus, Gordona, or Tsukamurella.</p> |
