A process for mfg. a lightweight composite plate with upper (1) and lower (9) facing layers and a core (2), all consisting of fibre-reinforced plastic involves: (a) cutting the upper (1) and lower (9) facing layers to size; (b) cutting a preimpregnated fabric core (2) from a pre-prepared material of suitable thickness; (c) placing the lower layer (9) in a tool cavity with the integral side flaps against the cavity walls; (d) locating the core (2) in the cavity; (e) folding over the upper areas of each flap onto the upper face of the core (2); (f) laminating the upper layer (1) onto the core (2) face; (g) curing the assembly (1, 2, 9) under pressure and heat. A tool for moulding the plate comprises a base plate with a rectangular cavity formed by a frame and an upper compression plate.
