The urn (2) has a lid (3) which is closed and locked by a transverse bar (11) which fits into a diametrical recess (12) in the underside of the lid and has its two ends (17, 18) engaging with grooves (19, 20) inside the rim of the urn when rotated by a knob (15) on the lid. The rotary knob connects with the transverse bar via a threaded rod (14), and the two ends of the bar engage with the grooves via recesses (22, 23) in the rim of the urn. The urn is made preferably from wood and has an inner metal container for the ashes of the deceased.
