<p>A vehicle component assembly (10) includes a polycarbonate optical lens, such as a headlight lens (24) with a resinous polymeric molded element or gasket (28) integrally molded to a peripheral portion (30) of the lens which may include grooves or other formed portions for mechanically interlocking the gasket with the lens. Preferably, the lens is coated with a protective coating or hard coat which provides abrasion resistance and ultraviolet radiation protection. Adhesion is improved by priming the area of the lens which receives the gasket with a first adhesion promoting primer (27b) followed by a second adhesion promoting primer (27c), wherein the first adhesion promoting primer improves the adhesion of the second primer to the protective coating, while the second primer, in turn, improves the adhesion of the gasket to the first primer and the coated lens. Preferably, the gasket is formed from a melt-processible gasket material, such as polyvinyl chloride, thermoplastic urethane, or an ethylene-styrene polymer. <IMAGE></p> |
