An automated storage and retrieval system (10) (ASRS) for different articles (17) wherein individual identical articles (16) are disposed in vertical stacks (17) stored in cells (19) of movable totes (18). The totes (18) are movable into and out of storage racks (31, 32, 33) by an automated storage/retrieval vehicle (35). The ASRS (10) includes at least two zones (41, 42) disposed along an order-collecting conveyor system (46). One zone (41) picks low-demand articles (16), and the other zone (42) employs high-speed dispensers (75). The articles (16), are deposited on a conveyor system (46) into a preassigned area (72) for assembly of an order. A controller causes the picking head (68), in the low demand zone (41), to remove a desired article (16) from a specific cell (19) for transfer to the preassigned area (72) of the conveyor system (46).
