The invention relates to an apparatus for detecting the value of coins, comprising a covering body (2) which can be attached to a container for collecting coins and features a slot (3) through which coins (24) to be recorded which each have a different size indicating a specific value can be introduced into said container. The slot (3) is delimited along at least one side by a sliding element (4) which is normally held in a resting position by a constantly acting load and in which resting position the slot is too small to permit the introduction of the smallest coin to be recorded. The sliding element (4) can be moved by a coin (24) pushed into the slot (3) into a measuring position which depends on the size of said coin. A measuring device measures the displacement of the sliding element (4) and thus the size of every single coin (24). A recording device records the value of the coin (24).
