The method involves specifying a desired fuel pressure which is compared with the measured fuel pressure and delivering a quantity of fuel to the fuel storage (9) depending on the difference between the desired and measured pressures. The quantity of fuel delivered from the fuel injector (13) is measured. The quantity of fuel fed to the fuel accumulator is determined according to the quantity output by the fuel injector.
