In the first aspect of the invention a gravimetric dispensing apparatus comprises a container/agitator assembly (14) including a support (36) for a container (40) and a container weigh scale (38) supported by the support (36). An agitator support (30) supports an agitator weigh scale (32) which in turn supports the agitator (34). The agitator weigh scale senses the force exerted by the agitator on the dispensed material in the container. The correct weight of material dispensed into the container can be determined by comparison of the weights measured by the container weigh scale and that measured by the agitator weigh scale. In another aspect, a method of measuring a dispensed mass and a method of dispensing material comprises dispensing material into a container (40), agitating the material in the container (40) by means of an agitator (34), measuring the weight of the container (40) by means of a first sensor, such as a weigh scale (38), measuring the force exerted by the agitator (34) on the dispensed material by means of a second sensor (32) and calculating the correct weight of material dispensed by comparison of the two measurements recorded by the first and second weigh scales.
