摘要 <p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve field angle characteristics and response speed characteristics which are problem of a Tn type active matrix liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal composition which is interposed between a couple of substrates of the liquid crystal display device has positive dielectric constant anisotropy and is oriented perpendicularly to the opposite surface of the substrate when no voltage is applied. Further, common electrodes 14 are arranged on both the sides of the pixel electrode 7 in parallel. When a voltage is applied to the pixel electrode 7 through a switching element 20, an electric field is produced with the common electrode 14 on the opposite substrate, but since the common electrodes 14 are arranged on both the sides of the pixel electrode 7 in parallel, the vertically oriented liquid crystal composition having the positive dielectric constant anisotropy is directed along the electric field to rotate in two directions; and the orientation is divided into two in one pixel and variation in transmissivity which is different with the angle of view is compensated to widen the field angle. Further, the liquid crystal does not have twist orientation unlike the TN system, so the time needed for the rotation is short and the response speed is made fast.</p>
