<p>A transfer cylinder is disclosed for use in a labelling machine for transferring labels cut from a linerless web including an active (permanently active or activated) adhesive on the web, while separating the labels from a base material. The cylinder includes a rotatable drum including a plurality of openings along the outer cylindrical surface of the drum. The drum is adapted to rotate between a first location where a label is positioned to contact the drum from a first conveyance, and a second location where the label is positioned to contact a second conveyance. The transfer cylinder provides that the label may be attracted to the drum at the first location. The cylinder also provides that contact between the label and the drum may be maintained as the drum rotates between the first and second locations. Finally, the cylinder provides that the label may be urged from the drum at the second location to be subsequently pitched and applied to items.</p> |
