The system includes a distance measurement arrangement (1) which sends an electromagnetic wave in moving direction of the vehicle (V). A receiver is provided which receives a wave reflected by an object which is located in front of the vehicle with respect to the moving direction. A determination apparatus is provided which determines the existence of an obstacle in direction of movement on the basis of the result of the distance measurement arrangement. The distance measurement arrangement can detect object in several different vertical areas.
