A method and optical system are provided which lessen spherical aberration normally associated with coupling small-diameter core optical fiber with a colli mating lens. By coupling and optically aligned ends of thermally expanded core (TEC) fi ber having a small output angular divergence to a GRIN lens, spherical aberration is significantly reduced.
