Vehicle restraint system includes at least one gas generator with at least one combustion chamber containing a pyrotechnic propellant charge, with a housing (10). Outlet channels (13) are directed and dimensioned so that the compressed gases produced when the propellant charge burns produce shear forces compensating one another when emerging from the housing. Preferably the channels lie in a single plane and are formed between two spaced walls and the combustion chamber is ring-shaped and surrounds a central manifold chamber.
