Azo dyes of the formula [where X is oxygen or a radical of the formula NR6, where R6 is hydrogen or optionally substituted C 1 -C 13 -alkyl (optionally interrupted by 1-4 ether groups and optionally substituted by hydroxy or C 1-4 -alkanoyloxy) R1 is C 1 -C 13 -alkyl (optionally interrupted by 1-4 ether groups and optionally substituted by hydroxy or optionally halogenated C 1-4 -alkanoyloxy) or is optionally substituted phenyl, Y is hydrogen, halogen or cyano Z is nitro or additionally cyano when Y is halogen or cyano, R2 is C 1 -C 4 -alkyl, methoxymethyl or optionally substituted phenyl, R3 is hydrogen, C 1 -C 4 -alkoxy or C 1 -C 4 -alkyl, and R4 and R5 are each C 1 -C 13 -alkyl (optionally interrupted by 1-4 ether groups and optionally substituted by hydroxy, cyano or C 1-4 -alkanoyloxy) or C 2 -C 6 -alkenyl] are useful for dyeing or printing synthetic materials and are synthesizable using novel dinitroaminoaromatics (as diazo components) of formula where X, Y, Z and R1 are as defined above.
