An ATM transmission network of variable bandwidth in which a network transmission element (12) is inserted at each end of the network (10) between said network and the ATM device (14), the transmission network element being informed of traffic parameters on each virtual path to enable it to compare the available network bandwidth with the required bandwidth and shut down one or more virtual paths (16, 16A) by inserting Alarm Indicator Signal (AIS) Operation Administration and Maintenance (OAM) cells until the demanded bandwidth does not exceed the available bandwidth. |
