The scoop of an overthrow shovelling machine is maintained level to the horizontal as the supporting arms of the scoop are swung vertically by a jack or jacks 6 pivotally connected between the scoop and the arms, said jack or jacks being supplied with liquid under pressure from the exhaust side of the cylinder(s) of the jack(s) 4 acting between the arms and the chassis of the machine to swing the arms vertically. Cams 18 on the bearing trunnions 11 of the latter jack(s) 4 control a slide valve 15 so that during the initial swinging of the arms from the loading to the discharge position the exhaust side of the cylinder(s) of the jack(s) 4 discharge to the reservoir 14 of the machine's hydraulic system and not to the first jack(s) 6.
