The invention concerns a system (11) for powder coating or similar surface treatment processes. The system (11) comprises a plurality of functional units (15) over which extends a continuous rectilinear overhead conveyer (14) in which the suspended carriages (13) with workpieces (12) suspended therefrom are hung. On both sides of the treatment region (17) the overhead conveyers (14) extend into a transfer region (16) in which change-over carriages (25) run on rails (26) transversely to the overhead conveyers (14). The change-over carriages (25) can insert and remove the suspended carriages (13) into and from the overhead conveyer (14) and convey them below the latter to the next conveyer. The functional units (15) are independent units with their own drives and are operationally interconnected by the change-over carriages (25) passing through the transfer region (16).
