PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To resolve the problem that a conventional liquid crystal display does not have a satisfactorily large contrast value. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display is fitted with a liquid crystal composition which is connected to switching elements placed at points of intersection of a plurality of scanning lines and a plurality of signal lines, and is sandwiched between a substrate attached with an electrode generating an electric field controlled by the switching elements and a opposing substrate which is placed opposing to the substrate and forms a transparent electrical conductor, and has a relative resistance which is 10<13> to 10<14>Ωcm and is under control of the electric field generated by the electrode.
