PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound capable of forming a chelate with a paramagnetic metal ion compound. SOLUTION: This compound is shown by formula I [R is a (O-interrupted or OH-substituted) 1-15C straight-chain or branched-chain alkyl; the chain, as the case may be, is interrupted and/or substituted by a 5- or 6-membered saturated carbocycle, and the cyclic group, in turn, as the case may be, is substituted by X (X is OH, etc.); R1 is H, etc.; however, R is neither a non-substituted alkyl nor a group of formula II, two or more of R1 substitutents being each CH2 OH], e.g. 10 2-[[2-(2-hydroxyethoxy)ethyl]amino]-2-oxoethyl}-α,α',α"-tris(hydroxymethyl)-1,4,7,10-tetrazacyclododecane-1,4,7-triacetic acid. The compound of formula I is obtained, for example, by reaction of a compound of formula III (R1 ' is H, etc.), with a compound of the formula R-X' (R is a group to be substituted at the N-atom on the tetrazacyclododecane; X' is an eliminable group such as Cl) to form a compound of formula IV which, in turn, is deprotected by catalytic hydrogenation.
