PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: (J) To improve water resistance, viscosity stability and high speed coating properties without damaging workability, initial adhesion, etc., by dispersing a (co)polymer comprising an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and a diene monomer in water by means of a dispersant comprising a specific modified polyvinyl alcohol, starch and succharides. SOLUTION: To 100 pts.wt. of a modified polyvinyl alcohol containing 1-20 mol.%, preferably 2-18 mol.% of an upto 4Cα-olefin unit and having a viscosity- average polymerization degree of 50-8,000, preferably 100-6,000, and a saponification value of 80-99.99, are blended 1-10,000 pts.wt., preferably 5-8,000 pts.wt. of starch and 1-1,000 pts.wt., preferably 0-200 pts.wt. of at least one saccharide selected from monosaccharides, disacchrides and oligosaccharides to obtain a dispersant. In an aqueous medium containing 1-30 pts.wt., preferably 2-20 pts.wt. of the dispersant, one or more monomers selected from ethylenically unsaturated monomers and diene monomers are emulsion-(co)polymerized in the presence of a polymerization initiator.
