A temporary support surface is assembled inside the tank and sprayed with foam to form the floating roof, and is later dismantled and removed once the foam has cured or hardened. A floating roof for a cylindrical tank filled with liquid is constructed by assembling a support (9) which extends over at least part of the tank surface area, then applying a layer of foam material (19) onto the support, and then leaving the foam to cure or harden. The support is then dismantled and removed from the tank. Independent claims are also included for (a) the system used in to carry out this method, comprising one or more elements which are carried through an access hatch (4) in the tank, an apparatus (15) located outside the tank for preparing the foam material, and a hose (16) for transporting the foam from the apparatus to the inside of the tank, and (b) the floating tank roof formed by this method, comprising a single piece of flexible material.
