A system for converting motion of the rectilinear reciprocating type to a rotary type comprises a combination of two motion-converting shafts of which one is a tangential or engine shaft (1) and the other a crankshaft (4). The tangential shaft (1) is rotated by means of racks (2) associated with the engine pistons (3).
