PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To identify the type of an object embedded under the ground with high accuracy and promptness by reducing noise for improved S/N. SOLUTION: This device 31 is provided with an excitation means 32 involving an exciting probe 41, a receiving means 33 involving a receiving probe 49, a signal processing means 34 which produces receiving identification signal for identifying the type of an object 39 embedded under the ground by an elastic wave signal from the receiving means 33, a data base part 35 in which embedded object data on every type of embedded object are stored, and an identification means 36 which identifies the type of the embedded object by means of identification based on the receiving identification signal. The exciting probe 41 allows an impact core 44 inserted in a hollow sheath pipe 45 with no contact, and transmits vibration given from an oscillating source 43 without damping to its one end part which is brought into contact with the object 39 embedded under the ground to conduct excitation.
