PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the magnetic recording medium in which good running and operating characteristics are secured during the production process of a non-magnetic supporting body and the medium, deterioration of the magnetic layer surface caused by back penetration and a transfer is prevented and a good electromagnetic converting characteristic is provided. SOLUTION: In the medium, a magnetic layer 2, made of a metallic magnetic thin film, is formed on a non-magnetic supporting body 1. In the body 1, a spacial average wavelength (Sλa) of a surface 3, on which the layer 2 is formed, is set to 6 to 10μm, a center line average roughness (SRa) of the surface 4, that is the opposite side of the surface on which the layer 2 is formed, is set to 2 to 12 nm. Moreover, a ten point average roughness (SRz) of the surface 4, that is the opposite side of the surface on which the layer 2 is formed, is set to 20 to 300 nm.
