The drive has a belt (6) connecting drive (2) and driven pulleys (4). the belt has a trapezoidal section to engage the sides of the V-section pulleys, one of which is adjustable to vary the spacing between the pulley faces and thus the drive ratio. The belt can be internally ridges. Each pulley has multiple cross bars (10) engaging on each side in rectangular openings (11) in the radial faces of the pulleys to fit into the recesses in the belt surface. The adjustable pulley can be controlled by a sensor for the operating conditions and an actuator controlled by a processor.
