PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an echo signal elimination device capable of generating a pseudo background noise equivalent to a transmission signal having only background noise on the occurrence that a transmission signal has only the background noise and adding the pseudo background noise to the transmission signal from which the background noise is eliminated. SOLUTION: An echo signal eliminating means 31 eliminates an echo signal from a transmission signal and background noise is simultaneously eliminated in this case. In the case that voice/silence discrimination means 1, 2, discriminate that a transmission signal and a reception signal are both in a silence state, a pseudo background noise generating means 47' generates the pseudo background noise by using the transmission signal and an adder 40 adds it to an original signal. Since the pseudo background noise is updated every time the transmission signal and the reception signal are both in a silence state, they are updated in the case that the signal level of the background noise is increased and the adder 40 smoothly attenuates/increases respectively the pseudo background noise before and after the update to prevent the signal from being discontinuous.
