PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To impart a security protection function for recorded information to the device. SOLUTION: A password inputted in a data input device 11 by the user is supplied via a transmission circuit 13, a light emitting element 15, a light receiving element 17 and a reception circuit 19 to a data and control pulse generating circuit 25 to become a data pulse. This data pluse is supplied via switching means SW1 and SW2 to a control head 7, and hence recorded on a magnetic tape as a control track. A control pluse is generated by the data and control pulse generating circuit 25 from a pulse signal of, for instance, 30 Hz, and is recorded via switching means SW4 and SW2 and a linear sound head 5 onto the magnetic tape. The magnetic recording and reproducing device is once turned into a reproducing operation, and the data pulse is reproduced and supplied via the switching means SW2 and SW1 to a data detecting circuit 29 to be converted into a password, and the device is once stopped. When the password inputted in the data input device 11 by the user and the reproduced password are coincident with each other in a data comparing circuit 31, the reproducing operation is commenced regularly by the device. At the time of noncoincidence, the reproducing operation is suspended by the device.
