The operating device has a rotary switch which is rotated in a first axial position for dialogue in a first dimension and in a second axial position for dialogue in a second dimension. A further switch is used for selection of the function or function group, which is indicated to the user by an acoustic, optical and/or tactile display (7,12). An elastic element may be used for biasing the rotary switch into the first axial position, with movement into the second axial position by simultaneous depression during the switch rotation.
