Process for regenerating a sulphur trap (3) connected to a NOx storage (4) of an I.C. engine (1) comprises: (a) adjusting the operating conditions of the I.C. engine to an operation with lambda ≤ 1.1, especially lambda ≤ 1, to a part A when a SOx charge of the sulphur trap was known; (b) subjecting the trap (3) to a heating current relative to a point B later than A, in which an lambda value of <1.1 is achieved, or shortly afterwards (point C); (c) passing the exhaust gas around the trap from a point D; (d) passing the exhaust gas through the trap (3) from a point F, in which the desulphurisation temperature is reached or exceeded; (e) maintaining the desulphurisation temperature up to a later point H relative to F, in which the trap (3) is desulphurised; (f) switching off the heating current at point H; and (g) switching the engine operation to normal operating conditions to point K later than point H. Also claimed is an apparatus for carrying out the above process.
