In prior art, the large pleated surfaces are produced from many individual elements sewn, bonded or vulcanised, representing high costs in material and manpower and limiting deformability in overlapping zones. The production of the curved parts of the lower edge of the pleats in parabolic shape requires in particular considerable work, essential for example for diverting water from the horizontal surfaces of the pleats. It is possible to produce the surfaces of accordion structure strips, in a much simpler way, by exploiting, partially or more or less intensively, the thermic contraction of fibres or fabrics used for reinforcement, which effect is considered negative in the transformation of rubber or thermoplastic elastomers. It is moreover possible to avoid a non-homogeneous distribution of stresses, thereby increasing durability. The invention also concerns the production of accordion structures for example for articulated buses, telescopic passageways and loading units installed in cold-storage warehouses.
