Heat exchanger for removing heat from fluid in a reactor

Heat is removed from a fluid in a reactor vessel, e.g. during a chemical or pharmaceutical process, by a heat exchanger in which tubes pass through openings (40, 42) in tube plates, at least one of which is divided vertically into two plates (36, 38), clamped together, with openings in alignment. Each opening has an annular recess (50) to receive sealing ring (40). The recess and ring are dimensioned so that a radial sealing action is produced by deformation of the seal arrangement (44) on the outer surface of the heat exchanger tube. Preferably, recesses are only provided around the opening on one side of each plate.
