Gas generator for safety system in vehicle

The gas generator has a container (24) with a liquid charge (26) which is vaporised by a pyrolytic device (30,28) in one end of the container. A plastics seal (12) at the exit end of the container is expanded by the increasing pressure inside the container to move onto a fixed cutting edge (14) which releases the gas. The cutting edge can be a spike or a shaped cutting edge eg, with a crossed blade pattern. The relative positions of the seal and the cutter set the pressure at which the seal is ruptured.
