At least one shift rail (2,3) moves when actuated by a selector shaft (10) of a manual gear shift to select the required gear. A reverse shift rail (1) is provided for reverse gear. Shocks during gear shifts are damped by a device (4) mounted on the selector shaft. When the selector shaft moves to select reverse gear, the device acts with the shaft to exert pressure on the forward gear shift rails to produce a synchronisation action, such that the inertial rotation of the gearbox input shaft is stopped. Preferably a lever (20) is linked to a housing for rotation and selects the reverse gear shift rail when the selector shaft executes a longitudinal-rotary movement. The lever is rotated and a spring supports the lever.
