The device has a hinged finger (19) controlled by a sensor located upstream of each hinged flap (16) in the transverse sealing unit. The sleeve (1) is folded by a width which is approximately the same as the width of the finished packing so that the sleeve is disengaged by the hinged fingers. The hinged fingers fold in symmetrically to the sleeve so that in cross section between the angular folded-in side walls and flat adjacent walls of the packing an angle of 30-60 deg is formed.
