An electrochemical battery cell has at least one plate set, each plate set including an anode, a cathode, and a separator between the anode and the cathode. The separator is formed by spraying a porous layer of a ceramic separator material, such as zirconium oxide, onto the anode, the cathode, or both. Spraying of the porous ceramic separator layer is preferably accomplished by plasma spraying. The porous separator layer is thereafter saturated with an electrolyte. For most practical applications, a number of the plate sets are placed into a sealed housing with external leads. <IMAGE> |
